Who can say they love going to the dentist?? Sadly, not many but this is a very common view concerning the dental environment. Many of us grin and bear it in the dental chair, but for some this fear can increase to a true phobia making the thought of dental care purely terrifying.

Dental phobias, also known as dental anxiety, can have grave oral health consequences for those who suffer from this psychological condition. The phobia can lead to individuals avoiding check-ups and cleans which can then lead to further issues regarding their oral environment.

There can be many contributing factors to dental anxiety including certain smells, scary looking instruments plus the harsh sounds that they produce and also previous negative experiences in the chair.

One of the best ways to manage dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your dental clinician and make them aware of how you are feeling and what triggers the anxiety to increase. Remember they are people just like you and they should always be more than happy to assist in any way to make your experience comfortable and void of fear.

There are also anxiety medications and dental anxiety treatment options which can assist in relieving the symptoms of anxiety.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
